Manchester United have a few players missing just now so the last thing that Ruben Amorim would want is for players to be missing through suspension.
Baby steps. When Manchester United invested in Ruben Amorim they knew that it wasn’t going to be a quick fix.
A fractured squad had to be ripped apart with a mixture of players who aren’t good enough and others who didn’t want to be at the club being moved on. Next, the Red Devils boss has to rebuild and sign the type of players who can contribute to success at Old Trafford. One such individual is Patrick Dorgu, who has grown into the United shirt, but who could lose his place in the starting XI.
Patrick Dorgu running suspension risk for Man United
The 21-year old Denmark international is a regular on the left-hand side of Amorim’s midfield with Luke Shaw dropping to a deeper, centre-half role behind him. With Lisandro Martinez back in training, having more options will help the Argentina international gradually increase his game time, rather than having to be rushed.
Up next for United is Everton who have Iliman Ndiaye playing on the right-hand side of their attack and a player who is capable of causing the best defenders in the Premier League with problems. Dorgu will have to be at his best to avoid missing the next game against Crystal Palace.
With four yellow cards to his name in 11 games already, he will have to walk a tightrope for the next eight if he doesn’t want to have to watch from the stands, as explained by the Premier League’s disciplinary regulations: “Accumulating five, ten, fifteen or twenty yellow cards in league matches can result in an automatic ban in your relevant league. Accumulated yellow cards in cup competitions are treated separately and can result in an automatic ban from the cup competition in which the yellow cards were received.”
Dorgu not rated as scout names who should be United’s left back
Despite being a favourite of Amorim, Piotr Sadowski, who was United's Central European scout hasn’t been quite as impressed.
"Honestly, having recently worked at Blackburn Rovers and operating on a much lower transfer budget, I would have had no problem finding a few players of Dorgu's level for United but, for £25m, you could get four," he claimed in an interview with Polish outlet Przeglad Sportowy. "Now, United are wary of bringing in youngsters. Amorim was supposed to be the one to do this, but the results haven't been right, so he prefers to buy ready-made players."
"He came to Manchester United when he was probably 16 (in 2020)," Sadowski said of Alvaro Carreras, who is now at Real Madrid and who the scout believes should have been given a chance at Old Trafford. "A very hard-working and ambitious boy, he learned the language quickly - I know because I met him personally.
"Initially, his career path was quite good. He was loaned to Preston, and received good reviews, and (then) United gave up on him, selling him to Benfica for a small fee. Carreras is a truly top-class player. There's a good chance he'll become the best, or one of the best, left-backs in the world.
"He scored a beautiful goal recently against Valencia in La Liga. It was a huge mistake for United to let him go. Something is missing here and I think that something is United's lack of courage in investing in young players."
