The San Francisco 49ers are in the middle of one of the NFL’s most intriguing quarterback debates, thanks to the stellar play of Mac Jones and the lingering injury to Brock Purdy. Former 49ers star Richard Sherman fueled that discussion this week after praising Jones’ recent performances and suggesting that head coach Kyle Shanahan may face a difficult decision as Purdy nears a return.
Jones has been efficient and composed while filling in for the injured starter, steering the Niners to a 5-3 record in his eight starts. His latest outing against the Rams was his most impressive yet, completing 33 of 39 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns. San Francisco’s offense has looked balanced and confident under his leadership, despite key injuries to Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall.

Sherman’s argument centers around the momentum Jones has built, calling it a “hot hand situation” that sets up a dilemma for Shanahan. While the organization remains committed to the $265 million contract they extended to Purdy, Jones’ command of the offense has created undeniable locker room confidence. His precision and game management have kept the 49ers competitive while Purdy recovers from a lingering turf toe injury.
According to team insiders, Purdy is close to returning and could suit up against the Cardinals, but concerns remain over his ability to play at full strength this season. Shanahan has acknowledged the team does not expect him to be completely healthy in 2025 and has emphasized caution after an earlier setback. Even if Purdy is cleared, the temptation to ride Jones’ momentum could reshape San Francisco’s immediate future.

Sherman recently gave his two cents about San Francisco’s dilemma with Jones and Purdy. This can be seen in a post shared by the former NFL star on his X account.
I just don’t see how Kyle will be able to take Mac Jones off the field with how he’s playing. I know Brock Purdy HAS to start if he’s healthy but this is a hot hand situation right now and MAC is rolling! Not trying to spark controversy but this is an obvious observation.…

Jones has remained diplomatic, insisting he is focused on performing each week rather than worrying about his status. Still, his consistency has sparked speculation that other teams may pursue him if San Francisco sticks with Purdy long-term. For now, Shanahan must decide between loyalty to his franchise quarterback and trusting the rhythm of a player who has revitalized the team’s offense.

The 49ers’ decision in the coming weeks could chart the course for the rest of their season. Whether they choose stability or the hot hand, one thing is certain, the quarterback question in San Francisco is far from settled.
