Steelers vs. Bengals: The matchup

Cincinnati took the previous matchup between these teams Week 7 in Cincinnati (33-31), with Joe Flacco beating Aaron Rodgers in the matchup of 40-plus quarterbacks. Including that loss, the Steelers have dropped three of their past four games and lost their firm grip on the AFC North Division. The oasis in that desert of losing was a surprising Week 9 home win over the first-place Indianapolis Colts (27-20) that showed the team’s upside when all the pieces fall into place. That progress was negated, and then some, last Sunday night in a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers (25-10) where the Steelers turned the ball over three times and were a non-factor before scoring their only touchdown with 2:57 remaining and facing a 25-3 deficit.

For the banged-up Bengals, that win over the Steelers in Week 7 was their only victory in seven tries since starting quarterback Joe Burrow was lost to a toe injury. Even so, Cincinnati poses a big threat to Pittsburgh with Flacco under center and on a run of three straight games scoring 30-plus points while losing in dramatic fashion to the New York Jets (39-38) and Chicago Bears (47-42) over the past two weeks. The Bears drove 72 yards in 37 seconds to score the winning touchdown with 17 seconds left last week to negate a 470-yard passing day by Flacco and the Cincy offense.
