Scotland lost a thriller in Greece but still remain in the hunt for automatic World Cup qualification.
Andy Robertson’s Scotland lost 3-2 in Greece but Denmark’s stumble kept their World Cup dreams alive.
Scotland were fearing the worst as they let in three sloppy goals in the first half before hauling themselves back into the game.
They couldn’t level the game however, but Belarus’ surprise draw to Denmark now puts Scotland within one game of their first World Cup appearance since 1998.
If Scotland beat Denmark on Tuesday, they will qualify for the World Cup, something that will be a remarkable feat for the country.
So, despite what would’ve been a damaging loss in other circumstances, Scotland now have a real opportunity to make history.
Scottish media reacted to Scotland’s loss, and The Scotsman dished out some player ratings.
Andy Robertson was given a 6/10.
“The captain will not be pleased with his role in the opening goal. Showed all his experience and influence to drive on a Scotland fightback and tried to support his forward players whenever possible.”
“Lovely cross for Christie’s goal. Cap No.90 for the Liverpool man – and probably won’t have played in a more barmy encounter.”
The Scottish Sun also rated Robertson a 6, saying: “Tricky task up against Greek whizz-kid Konstantinos Karetsas. Got away with misjudged clearance as teen waltzed in behind him.”
“Skipper wasn’t involved as much as he’d like but did step up with sensational cross for Christie’s goal.”
Edinburgh News were slightly harsher in their assessment of the captain’s performance.
“The skipper looked ropey again. fresh-air attempt at a cross early on summed up his night. Glaring first-half error almost led to a Greece goal.”
“Threatened with a few teasing crosses, including McTominay’s chance. Failed to track Karetsas’ run for Greece’s second goal. Grabbed an assist in a bright second half showing.”
Andy Robertson has tasted defeat with Scotland again, but a positive for Liverpool is that he emerged from the game unharmed and not injured, a big boost for the Reds.
