Enzo Maresca could look for added firepower and defensive stability at Chelsea come January.
Enzo Maresca’s side sit third in the division after three games and are just four points off league leaders Arsenal. There’s been plenty of reason for optimism, as well as some worries, such as disciplinary issues amid several red cards.
There’s still a long way to go this season and Chelsea are known for their busy transfer windows. LondonWorld looks at the current transfer rumours ahead of January.
Chelsea starting XI if transfer rumours are true
Goalkeeper: Zion Suzuki
It feels unlikely that Enzo Maresca will ever not face questions over the goalkeeping position. Chelsea were linked with a move for AC Milan star Mike Maignan prior to the Club World Cup this summer but that fell through. The Blues have since put faith in Robert Sanchez, who has had some strong showings this term.
However, Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport claim that Chelsea are tracking Parma star and Japan international Zion Suzuki over a potential move. It’s claimed the 23-year-old is studying English ahead of a potential move.
Defenders: Reece James, Ronald Araujo, Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella
Reece James and Marc Cucurella continue to impress at full-back but there is somewhat of a lack of strength in the centre of defence. CaughtOffside reports that Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo is being monitored by Chelsea, alongside Premier League rivals Liverpool, ahead of January. The Uruguay international is valued by the Spanish giants but the report claims that the club ‘would have a price’ for a sale.
Defensive Midfielders: Moises Caicedo, Kobbie Mainoo
Attacking Midfielders: Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto
Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez have formed one of the Premier League’s most respected partnerships at the heart of midfield. Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo could join the duo as he continues to be linked with a move away from Old Trafford.
CaughtOffside claim that the Blues are one of 10 clubs looking at a January swoop for the England international. Potential competition could come from Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Leeds United.
Blues eye former Manchester City talisman
Striker: Julian Alvarez
Chelsea splurged £60 million on Joao Pedro and £30 million on Liam Delap this summer but there’s a feeling that there could be space for another striker at Stamford Bridge. Pedro has struggled for consistency in front of goal while Delap has been blighted by injury.
Transfer specialist Graeme Bailey claims that former Manchester City man Julian Alvarez could be someone the club moves for. He said: "He [Julian Alvarez] has been very good for Atletico, but intermediaries are making it clear that he is considering his options.
“Whilst Barca seems the most likely option for him — PSG and Chelsea are very much keeping close tabs on the situation. I am told that clearly Barca and PSG appeal to Alvarez, but don’t rule out a move to London with Chelsea."
