The Kansas City Chiefs got the ball to start the second half. Jahdae Barron made a massive third down pick six that was negated by the tickiest of tack illegal contact penalties on — you guessed it — Riley Moss. That would spark the Chiefs offense where Patrick Mahomes would find Travis Kelce wide open after what looked like a pick play by the offense for a big gain.
Kelce would catch two more to get the Chiefs down into the red zone. The interception looked like a back-breaker for Denver. However, on a third and 14, Mahomes would get pressured and throw it up where Ja’Quan McMillian would intercept it. After a long return, the officials made sure to call some penalties on Denver to negate the big return and push the Broncos back to their own 10 yard line instead.
Bo Nix found a wide open Troy Franklin on the first play and this time Franklin caught the ball. They would get a first down on a RJ Harvey four yard run on second and short. A few plays later on third and long, Nix went deep to Troy Franklin again and it was caught again for a 35-yard gain.
The tempo increased a bit on this drive and you could see it play out well with another completion to Courtland Sutton for 14 yards to get the Broncos into field goal range.
Two plays later on third and two, Nix found Harvey again for a solid gain down to the Chiefs eight yard line to bring a first and goal opportunity on that drive. They went into a heavy set where Jaleel McLaughlin would plow his way forward for a five yard gain on first down. They would score on the next play on another run by McLaughlin.
Mahomes wouldn’t go down without a fight. On a third and long and in danger of going three-and-out, he would chuck the ball 60 yards down the field to Tyquan Thornton who came down with it at the Broncos 11-yard line. Two plays later facing a third and inches at the one yard line, Kareem Hunt would power his way into the end zone to tie the game up.
That was the Chiefs first touchdown in Denver in 11+ quarters of play. The stage was set for a drama-filled final quarter.
The quarter would end with a Nix bomb to Pat Bryant for 48-yards, but Bryant would be driven hard into the ground head first and was injured on the play. It sure looked like textbook concussion-type hit. That will be a huge loss for the Broncos. He would get up and high-five his teammates as he walked off the field.
