Draymond Green gets in Pelicans fan’s face after tense exchange in New Orleans

The Golden State Warriors had just pulled themselves back above .500 with a pair of wins over the San Antonio Spurs. After getting embarrassed by the Oklahoma City Thunder earlier in the week, things felt like they were turning around again.

Sunday’s trip to New Orleans should have been another routine road game against a struggling Pelicans squad. Instead, a courtside confrontation became the story everyone wanted to talk about.

Draymond Green got into it with a loud Pelicans fan sitting courtside at the Smoothie King Center. Midway through the second quarter, cameras caught Green walking toward a supporter decked out in team gear.

The two had some words for each other before teammates and NBA referee Courtney Kirkland stepped in to pull them apart. Once the clip made it to the broadcast, it spread like wildfire.

Nobody knows exactly what the fan said to set Draymond Green off. The Warriors’ broadcast crew hinted that whoever it was probably “crossed the line” with their comment.

The former NBA Defensive Player of the Year has never been one to back down from confrontation. He moved toward the fan but didn’t make contact. Things cooled down pretty quickly after that.

As Pelicans forward Herb Jones lined up at the free-throw line, security made their way to the fan. According to Marc J. Spears of Andscape, the fan received a red warning card.

For New Orleans, this season has been brutal from the start. They limped to a 2-10 record and cut ties with head coach Willie Green on Saturday, less than a month into the season. Sunday night marked their first game since that decision.

The Warriors were waiting for them at the Smoothie King Center, and the results looked no different than before.
