PHILADELPHIA -- Jameson Williams had one of the few highlight plays of the night for the Detroit Lions.
Williams took a crosser 40 yards to the house, putting the Lions on the scoreboard for the first time. It looked like the offense found their rhythm, going 74 yards on three plays, about to take the lead against all odds.
The receiver scored with 5:12 left in the first half, with Detroit’s defense doing everything it could to keep the Philadelphia Eagles out of the end zone. Despite starting with two short fields, the Eagles were held to two field goals from inside their 20-yard line.
Williams’ big play tied the game at 6-6, and all the Lions needed was an extra point to take the lead. But the receiver jumped onto the goal post, straddling it with the ball still in his hands. He was instantly called for the 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
The penalty turned Jake Bates’ extra-point attempt into a 48-yard kick outdoors, in the windy and cold conditions. Bates missed the kick to the right, and the Lions and Eagles were stuck at 6-6 late in the first half.
Detroit wouldn’t score again until Bates drilled a 54-yard field goal with 2:03 left in the game. The Lions were trailing 16-9 after the field goal, but that missed extra point stuck out on the scoreboard.
Lions coach Dan Campbell kept his response straightforward when asked about the penalty after the game.
“Yeah, I told him that’s a hell of a play,” Campbell said. “Don’t do that again.”
The NFL banned using the goal posts as a celebratory prop back in 2014, making it an automatic 15-yard penalty.
Williams finished with four catches for 88 yards and the touchdown. He and Amon-Ra St. Brown combined for only six receptions across 19 targets on an ugly day for the passing attack. Williams has caught a touchdown pass in three straight games.
The Lions lost, 16-9, to the Eagles falling to 6-4 and third place in the NFC North.
