Amanda Staveley has issued eye-catching comments about Alexander Isak and PSR.
Amanda Staveley has insisted she “loves” Alexander Isak and backed the striker to succeed at Liverpool.
And in further bizarre comments, the former Newcastle United co-owner claimed PSR restrictions are “helpful” and “give fair competition” - despite being one of the reasons for her exit. Staveley left the club in July 2024 once Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh left to comply with financial restrictions.
The Magpies have the richest owners in world football but were forced to sell the club’s best two youth players against their wishes. Likewise, with Isak, Newcastle could have offered infinitely better wages than Liverpool if PSR did not exist.
Amanda Staveley on Alexander Isak
In words that are unlikely to go down well with Newcastle fans, Staveley tipped Isak - viewed as persona non grata on Tyneside - to justify his £130million price tag. She told Sky Sports: “You know, I am just so proud of Newcastle and how they are doing, and you know, we love Alex and we know he is going to do really well at Liverpool.
“He is a great player, Liverpool have got an extraordinary player. But equally so, it’s great to see the forwards doing so well and Newcastle performing really well.”
‘PSR quite helpful’ - Amanda Staveley
Staveley’s comments on PSR are perhaps more surprising. She added: “No. I think the PSR rules are quite helpful. They are there to give fair competition. We navigated them (the PSR rules) well.”

Eddie Howe on PSR
Speaking in August, Toon boss Eddie Howe admitted Newcastle remain gripped by PSR restrictions. He told reporters: "We're controlled by PSR," Howe said after the defeat at St James' Park. "That's still limiting what we can do and that's the reality.
"I've said many times, we're not the highest payers in the league. We're far from it and that is sometimes reflected in the choices players make. I don't think there's many players who have come here and haven't benefitted from the experience Newcastle can give you.
"Playing in front of these supporters, that's an absolute privilege and an honour that's never lost on me. It's a special place to be. Some players have a different choice. Finances play a part in that."
