State NFL roundup: Jameis Winston, Giants go down throwing versus Packers

The New York Giants fired coach Brian Daboll on Monday, and interim head coach Mike Kafka put former Hueytown High School star Jameis Winston in the starting lineup at quarterback on Sunday with rookie Jaxson Dart sidelined by a concussion.

Winston didn’t deliver an upset victory for the 2-9 Giants against the Green Bay Packers. But New York was in the game to the end before succumbing 27-20.

“I was so grateful,” Winston said after his 88th NFL start and first action of the 2025 season. “I really wanted to win for these guys, man. How we dominated the line of scrimmage, we ran the ball effectively. We did some good things in the passing game. Kaf did an incredible job calling this game. I really wanted to win this one for us.”

Winston completed 19-of-29 passes for 201 yards with no touchdowns and one interception and ran for 10 yards and one touchdown on three carries.

Winston started his season by completing 3-of-4 passes for 44 yards as the Giants moved 65 yards in nine plays for a touchdown on the game’s opening series.

Winston had a 20-yard completion and a 10-yard run on third-down snaps during an 11-play, 68-yard touchdown drive as New York tied the score at 13-13 with 1:11 left in the first half.

The Giants took a 20-19 lead on a 15-play, 85-yard drive that Winston ended with a 1-yard touchdown dive with 7:22 remaining. Winston had completions of 20 and 14 yards on third-down snaps and a 13-yard completion on a fourth-down snap during the series.

After Green Bay responded with a touchdown and 2-point conversion to take a 27-20 lead with 4:02 left, Winston guided the Giants from their 35-yard line to the Green Bay 14. But his third-down throw from there was intercepted in the end zone by safety Evan Williams with 36 seconds to play.

“Jameis had an aggressive mindset all day,” Kafka said. “I think he’s trying to give his guy a chance right there at the end in the end zone to go score a touchdown.”
