Alexander Isak’s injury-plagued season continued to cause frustration as the Liverpool striker made a brief return to action during Sweden’s dismal 4-1 defeat to Switzerland on Saturday.
Despite struggling with persistent fitness issues throughout the campaign, the £125 million forward was still included in Graham Potter’s squad for the November international break.
The 26-year-old has endured a miserable start to the 2025-26 season, with his self-imposed exile from Newcastle leaving him without proper pre-season preparation.
A groin injury in late October sidelined him further, forcing him to miss nearly a month of action before his international return.
Sweden manager Potter had warned supporters that Isak would only feature for limited minutes, stating the striker was “not ready to play two matches for 90 minutes”.
Isak entered the match in the 62nd minute at Stade de Genève, replacing Mattias Svanberg with Switzerland already leading 2-1.
The forward “looked eager to play” according to reports but managed just 13 touches and failed to register a single shot attempt during his 30-minute cameo.
Speaking to Sportbladet after the game, Isak has provided a boost by claiming that he felt “okay” and that his body’s reaction was “good”:
“It felt okay,” he said.
“I feel like the reaction was good after the match in my body.”
‘Hopefully I can play properly in the next match (against Slovenia on Tuesday). It’s always frustrating when you’re injured. Regardless of whether it’s one match or more. It’s always worst for the player himself.’
He added:
“It hasn’t been optimal. But when I’m on the field, I don’t give myself any excuses. I always want to play my game and perform.”
“But yes, it’s hard to be away and not be able to help and contribute. Now I’m back and I’m positive. There’s not much that’s easy in football. But with experience you learn to deal with things.”
“That’s how it is with injuries and all that. You learn to deal with it and get back on track the right way.”Want to get the latest Liverpool news direct to your phone? Join our WhatsApp community by clicking here.
