Chelsea asked Enzo Fernandez to help them sign ‘incredible’ player, the decision paid off

Chelsea have not been afraid to spend big money since Todd Boehly and co took over the club, and Enzo Fernandez is one of those who cost the club the most.

After joining for a Premier League record fee at the time, it is only since Enzo Maresca took over as manager where Chelsea fans are seeing the best of the World Cup winner.

This has not put an end to discussion that he could be on the move though. Reports have speculated Chelsea could sell Fernandez to fund Elliot Anderson’s signing.

Should Chelsea sell Enzo Fernandez to buy Elliot Anderson?

This deal would break up the impressive midfield partnership that has formed between the Argentine and Moises Caicedo, who was signed in the transfer window after Fernandez joined.

The duo are now arguably the first names on the teamsheet at Stamford Bridge, and perhaps wouldn’t have existed without the World Cup winner’s intervention.

Fernandez has stated that the Blues asked him to talk with Caicedo to try and convince him to join the club, with top sides such as Arsenal and Liverpool also linked with signing him.

He said: “When I found out that Chelsea want him, obviously I was the first to call him because, well, he is South American. The club asked me on their behalf to try to talk to Moises so that he could come.

“Obviously, I did, and I wanted a player like Moises to come. Incredible, who contributes a lot to the team. We know how important he is, and also the humility that he has. A person who always wants to learn, always wants to help you. The connection is very good.”

Fernandez and Caicedo inspiring Chelsea’s midfielders

Behind the South American duo, Chelsea have a very impressive set of midfielders who are waiting in the wings to feature.

Andrey Santos, Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo are all looking to learn from the starting two to try and increase their minutes when fit.

Santos praised both Fernandez and Caicedo for the examples they are setting as teammates, and the Brazilian is having to bide his time for regular appearances ahead of those two.

However, both will be needing rests as the season goes on, and Maresca will be hoping Santos is amongst the group who step up to deliver when needed.
