Liverpool are keen to tie down the player to a new and improved contract at Anfield

Liverpool were beaten 3-0 away at Manchester City last time out before the international break. They are back in action this weekend as they look to bounce back from their heavy loss at the Etihad Stadium. Nottingham Forest are the visitors to Anfield.

The Reds find themselves down in 8th place in the Premier League table after their first 11 fixtures. Arne Slot’s side need to find some more consistency this winter. They are only a point off the top four behind Sunderland.

Liverpool to offer Dominik Szoboszlai a new contract, says Fabrizio Romano

Liverpool have offered Dominik Szoboszlai a new contract, according to reporter Fabrizio Romano. His current deal at Anfield expires in June 2028 meaning he still has three years left to run down. In this latest update regarding his long-term future, journalist Romano has posted on Threads: “Liverpool have offered Szobo a new deal. Let’s see how talks go!”

The 25-year-old will not be going to the World Cup next summer. Hungary have missed out on qualification for the tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico in 2026 after losing 3-2 at home to Republic of Ireland in their latest qualifying clash. Ex-Tottenham Hotspur striker Troy Parrott scored a hat-trick in Budapest.

Szoboszlai, who has made 61 caps for his country to date, joined Liverpool back in 2023. He has since been a key player and has made 110 appearances in all competitions, 16 of which have come this season, and he has scored 17 goals. Prior to his transfer to England, he caught the eye over in Germany with RB Leipzig and found the net on 20 occasions in 91 matches for the Bundesliga club.

Why Dominik Szoboszlai is so important for Arne Slot and Liverpool

Szoboszlai is a useful asset for Liverpool to have at their disposal. He is still relatively young and has already played a decent amount of games so far in his career. In addition, he is versatile and can play in a few different position which comes in handy for Slot.

After he scored the winner against Arsenal back in late August, Slot was full of praise for him and said: “He's always been the player that I think he understands what a Liverpool player should look like. If you wear this shirt, you should give everything no matter in what position you play. As a midfielder, he's always the first one to track back and to press high. And today I don't think he did anything wrong. Unbelievable game from him in the position he probably paid only two or three times in his life so it tells you a lot about the mentality he has."

Liverpool have the chance to put things right against Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon before they play PSV on their own patch in the Champions League next Wednesday. It has been a tough start to this term for the Reds. Their upcoming opponents are in the bottom three along with West Ham and Wolves and have struggled.
