New York Jets defensive back Kris Boyd was shot over the weekend in New York and is in critical but stable condition, according to CBS News.
The outlet reports that Boyd was shot in the abdomen at around 2 a.m. Sunday morning.
According to PIX11 in New York, citing sources, the shooting occurred after someone tried to steal Boyd’s chain as he left a club.
The suspect and Boyd reportedly started fighting after the attempted theft, before Boyd was shot.
Police were searching for a suspect who fled the scene and was last seen wearing a black cap, black sweatshirt, black pants, multi-colored sneakers and carrying a black bookbag, per PIX11.
Kris Boyd is in his first season with the New York Jets after previously playing for the Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings. He has spent the entire season on injured reserve to this point.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams addressed the shooting involving Boyd Sunday afternoon.
“I am praying for New York Jets player Kris Boyd and his loved ones. Although we’ve gotten shootings to historic lows in our city, we must continue to work to end gun violence,” Adams posted on X. “Too many young lives have been tragically altered and cut short by this epidemic.”
PIX11 reports that Boyd is awake and talking with detectives about the shooting.
The 29-year-old, who starred at the University of Texas, has played in 79 career games across his seven seasons in the NFL.
Boyd has recorded 105 tackles, 2 forced fumbles and has 3 fumble recoveries to this point in the NFL.
