Dominik Szoboszlai was left in tears after Hungary's dramatic defeat against the Republic of Ireland on Sunday after being accused of ‘mocking’ his opponents before his nation's World Cup dreams went up in smoke.
The midfielder started the crucial qualifier and Hungary enjoyed a dream start to proceedings as Daniel Lukacs gave them the lead in just the third minute of the game. Irish striker Troy Parrott equalised from the bench before Barnabas Varga restored the Hungarian lead.
Given the importance of the goal, Szoboszlai and his teammates celebrated wildly. The Liverpool star was seen putting his hand up to his nose and wiggling his fingers about in the direction of the Hungary bench.
But it would be the visitors, rather than the hosts, who had the last laugh as Parrott scored twice more in the 80th and 96th minute to seal a dramatic victory for Ireland. And come the final whistle, Szoboszlai was spotted in tears.
Some fans then took to social media to criticise the Liverpool midfielder. One fan said: “Szoboszlai did a clown celebration against Ireland just for his World Cup hopes to be ended in the 96th minute.. Never celebrate too early!” Another added: “Szoboszlai doing a mocking celebration vs Ireland, typical dipstick because he was made to look the fool in the 96th minute..”
Former Premier League striker Kevin Doyle also appeared to take aim at the Liverpool star following Ireland’s dramatic win. Appearing as a pundit on RTE Sports, he was seen wheeling around the studio in celebration and allegedly said: "Suck on that you Liverpool c***.”

Doyle was then seen apologising to former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann, who was also a pundit for the coverage.
Szoboszlai spoke out after Hungary’s heart-wrenching defeat. Asked how much he was hurting in a post-match interview, he said: “Very much,” before he twice claimed that the defeat could not be analysed.
The reporter speaking to Szoboszlai then asked: “We saw a Hungarian national team with a good mentality and scoring fantastic goals. Is football just that unfair sometimes? How do you see it,” to which the midfielder simply replied: “It looks like it, yes.”
Szoboszlai and Hungary teammate Milos Kerkez will be aiming to overcome their heartwrenching defeat this weekend as they get back in action for Liverpool. Arne Slot’s side take on Nottingham Forest at Anfield.
