PHILADELPHIA -- It’s tough to find silver linings in losses like that.
But the Detroit Lions and their feisty defense accomplished that task. They played strongly from start to finish, while the offense couldn’t put one foot in front of the other in the 16-9 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.
The defense continued to give the offense a chance right up until the final couple of minutes. Philadelphia, much like the Lions, was brutal on third down and mostly lifeless on offense. The Eagles converted only four third-down conversions across 15 attempts. They had only one drive of 50-plus yards, settling for three short field goals.
Outside of a 1-yard touchdown, the Lions handled the “tush push” better than most, too.
The Eagles ran 40 times, but only mustered a 3.7-yard per attempt average. Jalen Hurts completed 50% of his passes for only 135 yards, trying to force anything and everything A.J. Brown’s way.
But when an offense plays like Detroit’s did, it’s going to be a tough day at the office. MLive’s Dungeon of Doom podcast was there for it all in Philadelphia on Sunday night. Hosts Ben Raven and Kory Woods discuss the offensive struggles, Dan Campbell’s fourth-down calls, Jared Goff’s ugly showing and the valiant fight from the defense.
“That defense deserved to win tonight. Like that defense deserved to win tonight,” Raven emphasized, pointing back to how they held their own after being put in countless tough spots.
Lions linebacker Jack Campbell posted 15 tackles, including one for loss. Aidan Hutchinson and Roy Lopez split the team’s lone sack, and while there were no takeaways, the Lions defended the line of scrimmage in impressive fashion.
Even coach Dan Campbell called the defensive effort “championship-style defense” after the game. Instead, the Lions fall to third place in the NFC North at 6-4, currently on the outside of the playoff standings.
