Despite slow start, rookie RB has continued to develop and help Patriots

Through the first half of the 2025 season, there were questions about whether TreVeyon Henderson could live up to the expectations surrounding him.

Now filling in for the injured Rhamondre Stevenson, Henderson has showed he can be a staple in the New England Patriots offense.

“I think he has had some really good runs," Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said during his weekly appearance on WEEI. “I think that we can block better. I think that he found the end zone, which was really, really important. And one time we helped him in there with a pile push. He made a good cut to make the first guy miss. And then we had a heck of a pile push.

“And I think some of his better runs are when he can knife inside. I think he finished strong on the safety, helped us out in the two minute, was able to catch the ball, get vertical," he continued. "I think just from a confidence and understanding of where he’s at and being able to get in there and know who to block, which isn’t an issue, but being able to understand that the players are a little bigger and faster and get into the line of scrimmage to block them. So I think he’s continued to develop and continue to do a lot of really good things to help us. And I’m excited that he’s having success."

Henderson had five touchdowns in as many days, including a three-touchdown performance against the New York Jets on Thursday night.

After a slow start to the rookie running back’s season, he has found a groove in Vrabel’s offense as has become a reliable target for Drake Maye.

“It’s a journey, the NFL comes with a lot of highs and lows,” Henderson said. “I think the biggest thing is preparation going into the week and with the reps that we have, just trying my best to take advantage of them. Continuing to try and grow and get better as a player. My running backs coach (Tony Dews) does a good job of pushing us, Coach Vrabel does a good job of pushing everyone. I think preparation is key.”

It’s possible Rhamondre Stevenson returns in Week 12 after he missed the last three games with a toe injury. It will be interesting to see how Vrabel uses the duo when they take on the Cincinnati Bengals.
