Newcastle United continue to assess Anthony Gordon's injury chances going into Saturday night's important clash against Man City at St James' Park.

The winger has not been seen in action since the 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League.

The Magpies are back in training now with the build-up to Saturday under way and international stars heading back one by one after World Cup duty.

But Gordon - who missed England's games against Albania and Serbia - has not set foot on the training pitch yet and continues to be monitored.

It remains to be seen whether he faces Man City and Chronicle Live understands he is rated at 50-50 for the encounter against Pep Guardiola's men.

Gordon was withdrawn from the England squad for victories over Serbia and Albania as Thomas Tuchel's Three Lions wrapped up their 100% World Cup qualifying programme without him. Eberechi Eze, Jarred Bowen and Marcus Rashford all had spells on the left flank in his absence.

Howe had described Gordon's hip injury as "minor" last weekend when quizzed on his absence at the Gtech Community Stadium. Howe had said last week: "Anthony has a minor injury, so he'll miss England.

"It seems like a recurrence of his hip injury that has been plaguing him in recent weeks. We'll assess that and see what damage is there."

Gordon has made seven Premier League appearances for United so far this season, serving a three-match suspension earlier this term after a red card against Liverpool in August.

He's yet to score or provide an assist in the league, but has four Champions League goals to his name, after netting against Barcelona, Union Saint-Gilloise (2) and Benfica.

Newcastle will have Harvey Barnes on standby to face Man City if Gordon does not make it.
