Boyd joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was expected to be a foundational player on special teams until he suffered his shoulder injury in August, which required surgery and left him on injured reserve.
Teammate Jermaine Johnson took to social media to issue an emotional message after the shooting. He wrote: "Everybody, please send prayers to my brother and teammate Kris Boyd and his family!
"Lord, please hold your healing hand over Kris and guide him back to health and safety." Lord I ask that you please just get him through this safely. In your name, Amen."
