Sources claim Chelsea made surprise sale offer last summer – and it tells you all about their…

ESPN’s Mark Ogden has written a long piece today about Manchester United’s midfield, and while it’s really about the Red Devils, it has a really juicy bit for Chelsea fans too.

Discussing Ruben Amorim’s team’s ongoing struggles to upgrade in the middle, Ogden mentions that they were offered a Chelsea player in the summer.

“The need for midfield reinforcements had been acknowledged by the [Man U] recruitment team,” Ogden wrote.

“Sources told ESPN that United rejected Chelsea’s offer of Romeo Lavia as part of the deal that saw Alejandro Garnacho move to Stamford Bridge, ultimately for £40 million, due to concerns over the 21-year-old’s fitness record.”

That really would have come out of nowhere. Lavia joined Chelsea 3 years ago but still has yet to complete 90 minutes for the club. We can’t see anyone taking him off us until he’s proven that he can stay fit. It’s very interesting to know that the club were already shopping him around in the summer, however, and we can only imagine they’ve grown even less convinced by his struggles since.

Lavia will probably stay in the squad long term because there won’t be any interest in buying him, but we expect next summer’s priority to be a premium priced upgrade on him, unless we see a miracle improvement in his fitness between now and then.
