Everton's best-ever Premier League XI including Wayne Rooney, Romelu Lukaku and one surprise…

Everton have had some incredibly talented players over the years, so we’ve tried to put together their best-ever starting line-up using players from the Premier League era.

The cut-off point is 1992, which is when the Premier League first began, so there will of course be some Everton legends missing from this particular team.

We’ve tried to select the players based mostly on talent, with less emphasis placed on longevity and loyalty.

Doing it that way has made for some interesting picks, so without further ado, here is what we’ve gone for.

Everton’s best Premier League XI of all time

So, starting off in goal, we’ve gone for the legendary Neville Southall, who is widely regarded as the best goalkeeper in Everton’s history. An honourable mention goes to Jordan Pickford, of course.

At right-back, it’s another pretty obvious one in Seamus Coleman; the Premier League’s best-ever signing at just £60,000.

The two centre-backs were really tough calls. Sylvain Distin is unfortunate to miss out, and so too is Jarrad Branthwaite, to an extent.

We’ve gone for a pairing of John Stones and Phil Jagielka, with Leighton Baines completing the rest of the back four.

Moving into midfield, Gareth Barry gets the nod with his wand of a left foot controlling proceedings. He’s partnered next to Mikel Arteta and Paul Gascoigne.

Gascoigne only played 37 games for the club, netting one goal, but based on his talent, it was impossible to leave him out. Admittedly, it will probably come as quite a surprise to many, with some feeling Steven Pienaar or Leon Osman are more deserving.

The front three are skilful, creative, fast and prolific. Wayne Rooney lines up off the left, Iliman Ndiaye is on the opposite flank, and big Romelu Lukaku takes centre stage up front. That trio would’ve been an absolute nightmare for opposing defenders.

Duncan Ferguson could’ve easily got in, and deservedly would’ve had it been based on longevity in an Everton shirt.

But Lukaku scored a whopping 121 goals in the Premier League and was one of the best strikers on the planet during his four years on Merseyside.

Here is the starting line-up in full.

David Moyes takes charge of this side, and surely would’ve challenged for the Premier League title had every player been in their prime.
