Report: Michael Penix Jr. in danger of missing the rest of the season

In an absolute gut punch, ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Michael Penix Jr.’s season is likely over after suffering a knee injury in Sunday’s loss to the Panthers. He’ll get a second opinion, but the outlook right now is not looking positively.

The cycle of misery is almost back at its starting point.

At 3-7, the Falcons have no choice but to begin evaluating their current regime. Raheem Morris has overseen a complete regression over his two seasons, despite the significant resources invested into the roster. Meanwhile, Terry Fontenot has yet to oversee a winning season in his five years as general manager, and very few executives survive a stretch like that.

On top of that, if Michael Penix Jr.’s knee injury proves to be significant, the Falcons will have to take a hard look at quarterback options this offseason. There’s a real possibility Penix isn’t available at the start of next season, and even more concerning is his history of knee issues dating back to college, where he suffered multiple serious injuries.

A potential new coaching staff is likely going to want their quarterback, and suddenly, the Falcons’ magical two-quarterback plan is in danger of lasting just two seasons. Atlanta could be heading into an offseason searching for a new head coach, a new general manager, and a new signal-caller — the exact same position they found themselves in back in 2021.

UPDATE: Ian Rapoport has reported Michael Penix Jr. is headed to the injured reserve after re-aggravating the bone bruise he suffered early in the season. In addition, there has been damage to the ACL, which could mean total reconstruction.
