Packers rookie impressed quarterback, finally flashed big play promise with “phenomenal” grab…

Sunday afternoon, the Packers escaped MetLife Stadium with the 27-20 win in comeback fashion. Midway through the fourth quarter they found themselves trailing once again after the Giants orchestrated an eight-minute touchdown drive.

Needing an answer, the Packers offense faced third and long near midfield with six minutes to go. Rookie receiver Savion Williams was the one to give them that answer, on a busted play that turned out to be his biggest of the season, a 33-yard bomb that set the Packers up in the red zone. Three plays later, Jordan Love and Christian Watson connected for the go ahead score.

Color Love impressed with the ad-lib grab from his little used 3rd-round target.

Williams made most of rare downfield opportunity

“We ran in pretty much stop routes, and you know, kind of went off schedule,” Love described the play. “I was in the pocket, had time. Didn’t like the initial read and just went on scramble drill, told him to go deep and he did a good job kind of wheeling up, and just threw him up a 50-50 ball and he went up and made a big time catch for us. Just a really phenomenal play by him.”

Fans haven’t seen a lot from Williams this season – his single target on Sunday resulted in nearly half his total receiving yards this season. The Packers typically deploy Williams in the short game rather than deep downfield, making the catch all the more surprising. Thus far this season Williams has 10 receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown. (He has also carried eight times for 28 yards.)

Occurring on one the two snaps he saw all game, Williams’ snag yesterday doubled his previous long and revealed some of the big play promise embedded in the versatile dual threat receiver (six touchdowns apiece through the air and on the ground with TCU in 2024).

Despite Green Bay’s receiver injuries he has logged 80 snaps on the season, including just eight over the last two weeks. At 6-foot-4, however, he has the height to rise up and complete contested catches.

It’s only one play, but maybe his pivotal grab versus the Giants will strengthen the connection between Love and Williams and give the Packers the confidence to expand his usage – or at least have him on the field more often.
