NEW YORK — Call it the end of an error.
After a meager 116-yard, one-touchdown outing in a 27–14 loss to the Patriots that dropped the Jets to 2–8, New York is officially benching quarterback Justin Fields and turning the offense over to journeyman Tyrod Taylor, multiple reports confirmed Monday.
Fields, whom the Jets signed to a two-year, $40 million deal in March, currently ranks in the bottom six in passing yards (1,259) among qualified quarterbacks. He sits ahead of only Vikings passers Carson Wentz and J.J. McCarthy — who have split starts—Browns rookie Dillon Gabriel, and injured quarterbacks Kyler Murray and Jayden Daniels. Fields has played in more games (9) than all of them.
Additionally, New York is averaging a league-worst 139.9 passing yards per game — on pace to be the NFL’s lowest mark since the 2022 Chicago Bears, who averaged 130.5. Fields, notably, was Chicago’s quarterback that season.
While head coach Aaron Glenn had downplayed concerns about Fields’ performance for weeks, he appeared to hint that the quarterback’s time might be up following the loss to New England.
“You know what? I’m evaluating everything, to be honest with you. I’m evaluating myself, the players, schematics, coaches, I’m evaluating everything. So, I don’t want to just place everything on that, that one situation. I’m just looking at everything, because as a head coach, that’s my job, to make sure that I put this team in the best position to go win games,” he said on Friday.
The Jets will now turn to Taylor, the 15-year veteran who joined the team in 2024. In five previous games filling in as backup, he has posted a passer rating of 88.1, with 498 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions.
While the 15-year wait to return to the postseason continues, the organization will hope to string together some wins with Taylor under center to build towards 2026. His first test comes Sunday on the road against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens in Baltimore.
