One week removed from the Detroit Lions earning their highest-ever offensive Pro Football Focus grade, things couldn’t have gone much differently for the Lions offense Sunday night.
After suffering a 16-9 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Lions (6-4) were tagged with a 56.4 overall offensive grade, the lowest by the franchise since Week 14 of 2023.
The Lions moved the ball fairly well with 317 total yards of offense, but their inefficiency and 3-of-18 finish on third and fourth downs ruined the team’s chances at taking a win off the Eagles (8-2) on the road.
The Detroit defense holding Philadelphia to 272 yards and just one touchdown despite facing frequent short fields kept the team from its lowest overall PFF grade of the season.
Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard’s unit earned a 69.9 overall defensive grade — the fourth-best mark of the season for the Lions’ defense — resulting in a 62.6 overall grade.
The Lions never earned a turnover, but held the Eagles to 4-of-15 on third down and stopped all but one attempted tush push, while creating 12 pressures on quarterback Jalen Hurts.
See below for more on the PFF grades and rundown of the snap counts:
*PFF evaluates every player on every play in multiple facets of the game, such as passing, rushing, receiving, pass blocking, run defense, etc. It is important to note that PFF doesn’t base its grade on the outcome of the play, butrather what a player attempts to do on a given play.
Five highest-graded defenders (with at least 10 snaps): LB Jack Campbell (74.0), S Brian Branch (73.6), CB Rock Ya-Sin (73.4), EDGE Aidan Hutchinson (72.5), DL DJ Reader (69.6)
Five-lowest graded defenders (with at least 10 snaps): LB Derrick Barnes (47.7), CB Amik Robertson (52.0), EDGE Al-Quadin Muhammad (54.1), DL Tyler Lacy (56.9), LB Alex Anzalone (57.5)
Five highest-graded offensive players (with at least 10 snaps): RB David Montgomery (73.6), RB Jahmyr Gibbs (71.6), WR Jameson Williams (67.2), WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (66.8), OL Taylor Decker (65.7)
Five lowest-graded offensive players (with at least 10 snaps): OL Tate Ratledge (35.8), QB Jared Goff (42.5), OL Kayode Awosika (47.8), TE Brock Wright (51.2), WR Kalif Raymond (51.4)
*Quarterback Jared Goff and the Lions’ offensive line stood out as the major problem sports for Detroit’s offense, earning a 42.9 passing grade, a 46.9 pass-blocking grade and a 53.9 run-blocking grade. Goff’s 42.5 passing grade after completing 37.8% of his passes — the lowest of his career — was only his second-worst PFF grade of the year. O-line play was particularly rough from the guard spots as Kayode Awosika (47.8) and rookie Tate Ratledge (35.8) had their lowest grades of the season (minimum 10 snaps) after being credited with allowing three pressures each.
*It’s becoming the norm that linebacker Jack Campbell is just a force to be reckoned with regardless of the opponent. Alongside the top defensive grade among qualified defenders for the Lions on Sunday, he had the top run defense grade (84.2) and tackling grade (83.8) after notching 10 tackles and making seven defensive stops against the Eagles. His overall defensive grade of 88.4 this season is second among linebackers in the NFL with at least eight games played.
*The bright side for the Detroit offense came from their running back duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, who finished with the only offensive grades above 70 for the game. Gibbs was used nearly twice as much as he amassed 146 yards of total offense, mostly in the receiving game. His 91.5 passing grade was the best of his career. While his usage wasn’t hefty, Montgomery was the more efficient of the two in the ground game as he averaged 4.5 yards per carry on six attempts.
