England 50-man list drawn up for World Cup squad as Man Utd and Arsenal stars face axe

Thomas Tuchel has drawn up an extensive list of 50 potential call-ups. The England boss is expected to be busy in the coming weeks, planning to visit, FaceTime and Zoom with World Cup hopefuls. Among the notable names is Brighton's young talent Jack Hinshelwood, whose ability to play both left back and midfield has caught the attention of Tuchel and his team.

His Brighton colleague Danny Welbeck is another one to keep an eye on, having narrowly missed out on the latest camp but currently in good form and known for being a great team player. However, there are likely to be some high-profile casualties, with Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold facing a race against time and odds to make the cut.

Chelsea prodigy Palmer was outstanding at last year's Euros and shone at the Club World Cup, establishing himself as one of the world's top young talents.

But Palmer has been plagued by injuries this season - partly due to a lack of rest because of the Club World Cup - and competition for the No10 role is fierce.

Morgan Rogers and Jude Bellingham are currently leading the pack, while Phil Foden's ability to play as a false nine gives him an advantage. This could also benefit Eberechi Eze, who can play both centrally and on the wide left.

However, all of this spells trouble for Palmer, who risks becoming the biggest casualty unless he can regain his top form and fitness for the second half of the season.

Tuchel's preference for face-to-face meetings with players, ideally in person, is to gauge their commitment to the England squad by looking them straight in the eye.

Alexander-Arnold remains a puzzle at the national level, with some speculating that his focus is primarily on succeeding at Real Madrid following a challenging start marred by injuries.

Ben White's chances of returning are slim while he's not playing for Arsenal. The same applies to Myles Lewis-Skelly, who risks being overtaken by Nico O'Reilly, while Djed Spence didn't start either of the November internationals.

Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire seem to have been sidelined by Tuchel. Elliot Anderson and Declan Rice are certainties, Tuchel wants Jordan Henderson, so perhaps Adam Wharton and others are vying for one final spot.

Dan Burn is a sure bet. Why?

He's a good team player and his height is an advantage during set-pieces.

Bukayo Saka is a starter, but Noni Madueke is highly regarded, with Jarrod Bowen hot on his heels.

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon are ahead of Eze, with Tuchel likely to select two wingers for each side in what will almost certainly be a 26-man squad next summer.

There's likely to be room for one more striker alongside Harry Kane. Currently, that position is up for grabs.

Ollie Watkins was the hero of the Euros but still has work to do.

Tuchel has a multitude of decisions to make - in every sense. However, the extensive list provides players with hope.

England now have just two friendlies in March - likely against Uruguay and Japan - before Tuchel makes the most challenging decision of all when he announces his squad.

Numerous stars will be nervously awaiting a call from Tuchel.
