MLB Insider Says This Free Agent Would Do Wonders For Roman Anthony

The Boston Red Sox are seen as one of the top potential landing spots for free-agent slugger Pete Alonso. Alonso’s right-handed bat is an obvious fit for Fenway Park, and he’s still young enough (30) to fit on Boston’s timeline, which involves a mixture of contending in 2026 and setting up a period of sustained success built around Roman Anthony in the years to come. Speaking of Anthony, Alonso would make Roman’s life a lot easier, at least according to The Athletic‘s Jim Bowden, who was talking Red Sox on Monday during a new episode of Foul Territory “In terms of first base, I think Pete Alonso would be phenomenal (in Boston),” Bowden said. “I know he doesn’t fit what they want (defensively), but … can you imagine how many dents he’d put in the Green Monster? They’d probably have to replace the Green Monster by the end of the year.” “And what would he do to Roman Anthony?” Bowden continued. “What would he do for the middle of that lineup? Take all the pressure off. I think it would be a great fit for them.” "Can you imagine how many dents he'd put in the Green Monster?"Pete Alonso would do more than just improve the Red Sox offense; he'd also take pressure off Roman Anthony and the middle of the order, says @JimBowdenGM. pic.twitter.com/rXUwpdx03F— Foul Territory (@FoulTerritoryTV) November 17, 2025 There aren’t any lies detected in Bowden’s analysis here. Adding Alonso to the lineup would definitely remove some pressure off the shoulders of a 21-year-old Anthony, who is already viewed by many as Boston’s best hitter. Story continues below advertisement Alonso isn’t the only bat on the market capable of fulfilling that role, however. It’ll be interesting to see how the Red Sox proceed this fall and winter, and Bowden also emphasized that the main assignment for Boston is to acquire a great No. 2 starting pitcher.
