49ers' injury woes officially extend to newest special teams hero

On one hand, a fully healthy San Francisco 49ers offense showed what it was capable of doing in the 41-22 Week 11 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.

On the other, injury problems continued unabated.

The Niners lost linebacker Tatum Bethune (ankle), defensive end Robert Beal Jr. (concussion) and kicker Eddy Pineiro (hamstring) during the game, and none of them returned to action. And for Pineiro's absence, it was preceded by a pair of missed extra-point attempts, which were uncharacteristic for the otherwise-automatic specialist.

And after Pineiro left the game, San Francisco opted to go for a two-point attempt on its final touchdown in the one-sided rout.

During his postgame presser, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed Pineiro suffered a hamstring injury, which required further testing to determine the severity.

While that testing didn't produce terrible news, the outcome isn't exactly great either.

Eddy Pineiro is week-to-week with hamstring injury

During his Monday press conference call, Shanahan elaborated on Sunday's injuries, which included Bethune suffering a high-ankle sprain; one that at least won't land him on injured reserve but will nevertheless test the 49ers' already-thin linebacker corps.

As for Pineiro, he suffered a Grade 1 hamstring strain that'll put him into a week-to-week status, likely requiring the Niners to sign an interim kicker to plug the gap.

Tatum Bethune suffered a high-ankle sprain and will miss "a few" weeks, Kyle Shanahan said. He said Bethune probably wouldn't have to go on IR.

Since replacing kicker Jake Moody after Week 1, Pineiro has made all 22 of his field goals, including three against Arizona despite two extra points missed, one of which was blocked.

San Francisco certainly lucked out with Pineiro being available on the open market in the wake of the Moody debacle, yet the bad injury luck that has plagued Shanahan's squad all year long opted not to leave special teams intact.

Fortunately, Pineiro's injury doesn't fall into the season-ending category, which has been the case for far too many of the 49ers' other stars.
