Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is facing a wave of backlash after his recent remarks about quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Critics argue Reid’s comments amount to “throwing Mahomes under the bus,” calling into question the coach-QB relationship that has powered one of the most successful dynasties in NFL history.

Mahomes and the Chiefs suffered a 22-19 loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 11. It was a devastating result for Andy Reid’s squad, especially since they had an extra week to prepare for their opponent. There was a chance for Kansas City’s offense to orchestrate a game-winning drive with a few minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but Denver’s pass rush came up clutch when it mattered most.
One glaring issue for the Chiefs was their unwillingness to commit to the run. Speaking to reporters Monday afternoon, Reid assigned some blame for the team’s lack of success on the ground.
“The runs are being called,” Reid told reporters. “It’s just sometimes they get turned into passes in today’s world. That’s how it goes, but we’re getting them in.”
Former Players, Analysts Sound the Alarm
Over the past few hours, countless NFL fans have ripped Reid for throwing his quarterback under the bus.
“Andy straight up throwing Mahomes under the bus,” one fan wrote on X. “I’m sick.”
“Reid calling out Mahomes was not on my 2025 Chiefs bingo card,” a second fan said.
“Andy Reid throwing the man who made his entire career under the bus,” another fan commented.
“This is about as weirdly deflective of blame and weak an answer I’ve heard from Reid,” a social media user said. “Does Mahomes need to hand off more RPOs? Yes Andy does nothing to help Patrick with easy buttons in Chiefs passing game because he refuses to build out under center rushes married to passes.”
After the Chiefs fell short to the Broncos on Sunday night, Mahomes took all the blame for the team’s 5-5 record.
“I think we’re really talented and we’ve got a lot of great players, but it’s about being more consistent. I think it starts with me,” Mahomes said. “There’s times where I’m firing and we’re moving the ball down the field at ease. But there’s times where we go in spurts where I miss a throw or a [pass] protection call. We haven’t been consistent enough to win games. It starts with me.”
Fan Reaction Explodes Across the NFL
On social media and fan forums, the blowback against Reid is loud and growing:
Some fans accuse Reid of being overly critical: “He built that offense—how do you throw Patrick Mahomes under the bus?”
Others call for schematic changes, arguing Reid needs to “tinker” with his system to better support Mahomes. Yahoo Sports
Analysts have also pointed out a deeper problem: Reid’s coaching adjustments seem stuck, even as opposing defenses evolve.
One recurring concern: is Reid more focused on criticizing than adapting?
Legacy at Risk?
This isn’t just a PR misstep — many see it as a potential fracture in the Reid-Mahomes partnership, which has produced multiple Super Bowls and defined a modern NFL era.
If Reid continues publicly questioning Mahomes, it could erode trust. And if trust fades, the dynastic run the Chiefs have enjoyed may start to crack.
