Everton will be looking to strengthen in January but could a move for one of Serie A’s best be on the cards?

Everton aren’t far away from being the sort of team that can challenge once again for European football having spent too many seasons looking over their shoulder.

The Toffees might be closer to the bottom of the table than the top in terms of league position, however, there is a lot to be hopeful about for the rest of the season with David Moyes tipped to strengthen again in January and in the summer. Money isn’t as tight as it used to be either with interest being reported in one of Serie A’s finest.

Everton considering move for Scott McTominay

Moyes has a very specific type of player who he likes in his starting XI and it is no surprise to see Football Insider reporting that Scott McTominay is someone who he is interested in and considering making a move for. The 28-year old Scotland international was Serie A’s player of the season and even made the top 20 in the Ballon d’Or rankings too. His stock has risen considerably since leaving Man United.

McTominay was already a goalscorer at United and for Scotland before heading for pastures new and chipping in with 13 goals in 39 appearances for Napoli as he helped his side win the Serie A league title.

What makes him the perfect fit for Everton though is that his 6ft 4inch frame, athleticism and aggression adds a different dimension to his ability to contribute with goals and assists. He might not be a natural playmaker or ball carrier like Jack Grealish, but he is a constant threat in the opposition box.

Everton transfer shortlist explained

“I also think along with a striker, a right-back and a central midfielder will also be on David Moyes’ radar,” the Toffees journalist wrote. “Moyes will lose both Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gana Gueye for the Africa Cup of Nations, and with Senegal being among the favourites for the competition, it’s likely they will be unavailable from late December till late January.

“So the Everton boss will want bodies in as the winter months take their toll on the squad. I believe the recruitment set-up will be in a stronger position come January too. They’ve had time now to understand relationships and how each other operates, that will allow them to be ready to act quickly. The biggest issue ahead of the window opening again will be the availability of the right players.

”Everton’s owners TFG will provide the funds if they are there, but the manager and the recruitment team will already know what and who they want, and I don’t believe they will stray too far from that list.” McTominay might be at the top end of the budget and a bit of a stretch, however, Everton are right to aim for the calibre of player who would get games for every one of the top teams in the country.
