Former winger makes surprising confession about his time at Barcelona – ‘I was part of a…

Arda Turan’s time at Barcelona remains one of the more unusual chapters in the club’s recent history.

Signed from Atlético Madrid for €34 million plus €7 million in variables, the Turkish winger arrived at the Camp Nou in 2015 with high expectations after shining under Diego Simeone.

Yet despite his reputation and the excitement that followed his transfer, Turan never managed to find a consistent rhythm in Catalonia.

He played just 55 matches and scored 15 goals before eventually leaving for Istanbul Basaksehir, drawing a line under a stint many viewed as unfulfilled.

Now 38, Turan has undergone a remarkable transformation in his career path. He is currently the head coach of Shakhtar Donetsk and has enjoyed a promising start, winning 15 of his first 25 matches since taking charge in May.

As he settles into life as a manager, he recently sat down with AS to look back on his playing days, especially the contrasting periods at Atlético Madrid and Barcelona.

Reflecting on his stint

When asked about the difference between the two chapters of his career, Turan provided reflective context.

He made it clear he appreciated both journeys for what they were. He explained,

“Looking back, I can say that I’m happy with both. They both gave me a lot and taught me a lot. My time at Atletico had a different dynamic.”

He then shifted to the Barcelona experience, describing how unique it felt to be part of a squad many consider one of the greatest ever assembled.

Offering deeper insight, he added, “Barcelona, on the other hand, was a very different story. Wearing the Barça jersey is something special for any player.

“That team was perhaps one of the best in the history of football. There I saw how a club can become a global brand not only for its football, but also for its organisation off the field.

“I was part of a magnificent team. Barcelona is truly ‘More than a club’.

“You feel it even more deeply when you are part of that culture. I will always remember those days with pride.”

When asked whether he felt misunderstood at Barcelona or unable to fully express himself, Turan offered a calm and measured response.

He places responsibility on circumstances rather than blame. He said, “I’ve never thought of it that way. Every stage has its own circumstances.

“Could I have lasted longer in terms of my sporting career? Yes, I could have.

“But I don’t blame anyone for that. I remember my days in Barcelona with nothing but pride and happiness,” he concluded.
