Robbie Fowler says Liverpool need to replace Fabinho to try and restore some stability to their midfield, while the Reds legend has also suggested a Premier League winger Arne Slot should target.

Fabinho departed Merseyside for Saudi Arabia in 2023 after a difficult final season at the club, but during his five years at Anfield he won every competition he played in, and was a vital cog in the sides that picked up the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020.

The Brazilian established himself as one of the finest defensive midfielders the game across 2019 appearances for Liverpool, chipping in with 11 goals, and Fowler feels he's never been adequately replaced despite Liverpool's successes under Slot.

“I do think we need a Fabinho type sitter in that park because as much as there are three fabulous players in there Mac Allister, Gravenberch and Szoboszlai, discipline would probably be the wrong phrase here 'cause I think they can do it, Fowler told Adventure Gamers.

"But you need that disciplined player to sort of sit there and try and control things. At times I think Liverpool have maybe been a bit too risky with the three midfielders going forward when it's probably not on. I think they do need that little bit of stability in front of that back four.”

As well as an addition in the heart of the midfield, Fowler would also like to see the Reds chase a winger in the coming months.

Liverpool have been linked with Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo, who has a £65m release clause in his contract, but Fowler has also spotted another winger - and a favourite of Slot at his former club Feyenoord - on the south coast who he thinks the Reds could target.

“I saw Liverpool were linked with Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo," Fowler continued. "Yankuba Minteh has been very good for Brighton and that's the beauty of the Premier League.

"If you’ve got a player who’s playing well and performing, you're going to get linked with other clubs. Would Brighton want him to go? No. Bournemouth won’t want Semenyo to leave and Everton won’t want Ndiaye to leave either.

"Salah's not going to be around forever, even though he’s just signed a new contract. But anyone who Liverpool think can fit that bill, they’re going to try and sign them.”
