Former NBA guard Patrick Beverley was arrested on a charge of felony assault on Friday in Texas.
Beverley, 37, was arrested in Rosharon, Texas, according to the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office. According to court documents, he is accused of assaulting a family or household member in a way that impedes breathing or circulation, the Houston Chronicle reports.
Beverley was booked in Fort Bend County Jail and was later released after he posted $40,000 bail.
The NBA veteran issued a statement on Friday saying “Please don’t believe everything you see on the internet,” he wrote in a post to X.
Beverley’s attorney, Letitia Quinones-Hollins, also issued a statement on his arrest, saying the incident occurred after he “unexpectedly” found his younger sister, a minor, alone at home with an 18-year-old man “in the middle of the night.”
“Patrick Beverley has no criminal record,” reads a statement posted to Beverley’s X account. “He cares deeply about his little sister – a young lady, a minor. Given that, when he unexpectedly found her alone in the home with an 18-year-old man in the middle of the night, he was understandably concerned, as any brother would be about his sister. However, we don’t believe what followed happened the way it’s been described and we look forward to the opportunity to address that in court.”
Beverley played 12 seasons in the NBA from 2012-24 for the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, Philadelphia 76ers and Milwaukee Bucks. He earned one All-Defensive First Team honor and two All-Defensive Second team honors during his career.
Beverley finished his NBA career averaging 8.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.1 steals in 26.6 minutes across 666 games, including 518 starts.
