Here's Where Detroit Ranks Among Sports Towns In The Nation

DETROIT — A recent study recognized Detroit as one of the best sports towns in the nation.

Detroit is one of a handful of towns to have teams across the four major sports leagues: the Red Wings, Pistons, Tigers and Lions.

WalletHub compared nearly 400 towns nationwide using 50 key metrics across football, baseball, basketball, soccer and hockey.

Detroit came in at No. 27. It was the second-ranked hockey town and earned the No. 22 ranking for baseball and No. 25 for basketball. It was placed No. 34 for soccer and No. 40 for football.

The Detroit Red Wings won the city's last major championship in 2008 when they defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins to win the Stanley Cup. The Red Wings have won 11 Stanley Cups (1936, 1937, 1943, 1950, 1952, 1954, 1955, 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008).

The Tigers have won four World Series titles (1935, 1945, 1968 and 1984). The Pistons have won three NBA Championships (1989, 1990 and 2004). The Lions have four NFL Championships (1935, 1952, 1953 and 1957). The Lions have never won a Super Bowl.

"Sports can cause rivalries between cities, but can also give people a deep appreciation for places other than their hometown," said Chris Lupo, an analyst from WalletHub. "The best sports cities overall tend to be those with the highest-performing, most-popular professional teams."

Boston was ranked the top sports town in the nation, with top five spots across the four major sports leagues, according to the report.

Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, New York and Dallas round out the top five, according to the report.
