“This is a joke” – Liverpool player rubbishes claims of taunting fans

Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai has rubbished claims he taunted Republic of Ireland fans during the 3-2 defeat.

Blikk have comments from the Liverpool midfielder today. It’s his first public appearance since Hungary’s defeat to Ireland on Sunday.

A late, last gasp goal from Troy Parrott to secure his hattrick in that game secured all three points for Ireland to move them into second in the group above Hungary on the final game of World Cup qualifying. They’ll now head to the World Cup play-offs.

It was a rough evening for Hungary, who had the lead from the fourth minute and then again from the 37th and appeared to be on course for victory.

Szoboszlai ended up doubly hurt as he was seen celebrating wildly when Hungary took the lead for a second time. His celebration, with his hand in front of his nose, was seen as a mocking gesture to Ireland fans by some.

The images went viral on social media, with the Liverpool star mocked as that context was assumed. He, though, wants to make it clear that there was no mocking going on.

“It is still difficult to accept what happened. Unfortunately we have to live with it and move on,” he said.

“There is certainly a reason why this always happens to us. But we try to take the positives out of the most difficult times. We had a chance until the end; we believed that we could make the playoffs.

“This (the celebration) is a joke between my own teammates, András Schäfer, Barnabás Varga and Péter Szappanos. If it was meant for the Irish, I would tell them.”
