LeBron James is going to show up and ruin the chemistry of the Los Angeles Lakers. That is the thought that a concerning amount of people have talked themselves into with his return from sciatica injury right around the corner. It's like basketball watchers are forgetting who LeBron is.
Sure, there will probably be a bit of an adjustment period to have the pieces fall into place perfectly with James in the mix. However, the same can be said of any situation. The idea of the Lakers adding back an All-NBA caliber talent and not improving in the long run is ludicrous.
That is especially true when one takes the time to remember who they are talking about. James is the definition of versatility. That much has been the case for the entirety of his long and legendary career. Whatever the Lakers need from their aging superstar is what they will get.
LeBron has adapted to every roster, system, and situation — the Lakers won't be any different
James was asked about his role with the Lakers after his first practice with the team this season. There was a confidence to the indifference felt by the all-time great.
"It don't matter," James told reporters. "I'm a ball player. ... The way I've built my game, ... there's not one team, one club in the world that I can't fit in and play for. I can do everything on the floor. So whatever this team needs me to do, I am where I can do it when I'm back to myself."
James certainly has the right type of attitude, and what should be the correct lens regarding his brand of basketball. LeBron has proven malleable time and time again. There is no reason why this time would be any different than before.
James has spent the majority of his career, his life, as the best player on the team he plays for. That is not the case with Luka Doncic donning purple and gold. Nor should it be at this stage of LeBron's career.
After an imperfect start to their partnership, there should be plenty of room for James to capitalize on the lessened defensive attention he is about to get in 2025-26. To think LeBron would suddenly get in his own way is a touch comical.
One could easily argue this will be the last great chance for James to add a fifth championship to his storied career. There will be no wasting that opportunity.
