Ex-Liverpool star carried off in worrying scenes moments after spectacular Scott McTominay goal

Ben Gannon-Doak had to be stretchered off just 20 minutes into Scotland’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Denmark as the former Liverpool star suffered another worrying injury.

The 20-year-old, who left the Reds during the summer transfer window after three years at Anfield, went down clutching his hamstring and looked to be in agony before a stretcher was called for to carry him off the pitch.

Just moments earlier, Gannon-Doak had played a huge hand in putting Scotland ahead, providing the cross for Scott McTominay to score with a spectacular overhead kick, and give Andy Robertson’s men the perfect start to their winner-takes-all encounter.

The Liverpool left-back captained his country once again in their final qualifying game at Hampden Park, with the hosts knowing that a win would see them qualify for their first World Cup since 1998, having started the evening just a point behind their opponents.

McTominay's goal gave them the perfect start, although Gannon-Doak's injury came as a major blow after an impressive opening from the former Reds star.

Gannon-Doak joined Bournemouth during the summer, having found his opportunities limited at Anfield after suffering injury problems following his switch from Celtic in 2022.

The youngster had looked to have been a huge prospect for Liverpool after impressing with his early performances, but injuries led to long spells out of the side before he joined Middlesbrough on loan in the 2024/25.

Another hamstring problem cut short his season in the Championship before he made the switch to Bournemouth in the summer, where he has made five appearances so far with just one start to his name.

This latest setback looks as though it may leave Gannon-Doak facing another spell on the sidelines, and may come as a blow should Scotland secure its place at the World Cup.

Reflecting on his time at Liverpool ahead of his latest international appearances, Gannon-Doak told BBC Sport last week: “When you join a club of that stature, you see how high the level can really go," said the 20-year-old

"It humbles you a lot and shows you how far you need to go, but it also shows you that when you do well against those players, you can do it against anyone.”
