Andy Robertson said he'd been thinking about his late, former Liverpool team-mate Diogo Jota after he helped Scotland qualify for the World Cup. The emotional Tartan Army captain was speaking after a crazy game at Hampden Park.
Scotland needed to beat Denmark to reach their first World Cup finals since 1998. And thanks to two injury-time goals, they did just that, winning 4-2 in thrilling fashion to seal their place at the 2026 tournament to be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
And in his post-match interview with the BBC, Robertson brought up his great friend, Jota, the Portugal international who died in a car crash along with his brother Andre Silva in July.
The Liverpool left-back said: "It was one of the craziest games of football - we certainly put the country through it, but I'm sure it’s all worth it. We’re going the World Cup! I can’t believe it!
"I’ve hid it well but today I’ve been in bits. I know the age I’m at this is my last chance of a World Cup and I couldn’t get my mate Diogo Jota out of my head today. We spoke so much together about this World Cup.
"He missed out on (2022 World Cup in) Qatar through injury and I missed out because Scotland never went. We always discussed what it’d be like going to this World Cup and I know he’ll be somewhere smiling over me tonight.
"I couldn’t get him out of my head the whole day so I was in a bit of trouble in my room. But I hid it well from the boys and I’m just so glad it’s ended up this way."
