Alarming trend shows exactly why Eagles' passing offense is one of NFL's worst

Even though the Philadelphia Eagles continue to pile up the victories in the 2025 season, they have done so in a way that is so aggressively unfun to watch that it has put head coach Nick Sirianni and much-maligned offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo in this fanbase's crosshairs.

Patullo has somehow managed to take offense with Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, and Jalen Hurts on it and made it incredibly boring. Not only is Barkley averaging fewer than 4.0 yards per carry, but Brown has been so ineffective that it has fans wondering if he is going to request a trade at the first available opportunity.

Patullo appears to have developed a weird fascination with the hitch route to the point that he has made it the guiding principle of his passing game. This philosophy has been killing the Eagles this season, yet Patullo is committed to it.

No team has as many as two players in the top 16 of hitch routes run across the NFL except for the Eagles, who have three. Both Dallas Goedert and DeVonta Smith rank in the top three in hitch routes run in the NFL at over nine per game. Earth to Kevin: this isn't working!

Eagles' running too many hinge routes explains terrible passing game

Hurts may never become Patrick Mahomes as a pure passer, but one of his best traits as a thrower is stretching the field with deep passes. Patullo has taken those plays almost entirely out of his playbook, which is a good way to get a deep threat like Brown extremely frustrated with the direction of this offense.

While it has helped the Eagles avoid turnovers, as Hurts has just one interception all season long, it's made their offense so predictable that a unit almost identical to the one Kellen Moore was eviscerating the league with last year has needed to be bailed out by Vic Fangio's defense.

If this keeps going, it looks like Patullo may not be guaranteed another year as the coordinator. Sirianni's coordinator hires have been highly mixed, to say the least. He hit home runs with Shane Steichen and Moore, both of whom are head coaches now, but appears to have whiffed on Patullo and Brian Johnson.

With an in-season firing extremely unlikely, Philly needs to grit their teeth and hope that they can keep grinding out these ugly, unattractive wins with Patullo putting ankle weights on the offense for no reason whatsoever.
