Scotland will be going to the 2026 World Cup, thanks to an outrageous stoppage-time winner from Celtic hero Kieran Tierney against 10-man Denmark.
Three of the four goals scored by Scotland – Scott McTominay’s overhead kick after three minutes, Tierney’s curling effort from distance to make it 3-2 in the 93rd minute, and Kenny McLean’s halfway line wonder strike in the 98th minute – will go down as some of the best strikes in the nation’s history.
But an interview with BBC Sport Scotland after the match, from boyhood Celtic fan and Scotland captain Andy Robertson, was perhaps one of the best and most emotional moments of a rollercoaster night.
From Robertson’s emotional message about his late friend and Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota to his mention of Celtic hero Kenny Dalglish.

Kelly Cates, the daughter of the legendary Celtic and Liverpool striker Kenny, was presenting Scotland’s must-win match against Denmark for the BBC.
Whilst Robertson and his Scotland teammates can’t celebrate reaching the 2026 World Cup in America, Canada and Mexico just yet because domestic football resumes at the weekend.
The Liverpool left-back stated how he will make sure to ‘share a red wine’ with King Kenny when he travels back down to Merseyside.
“I can’t wait to go back down to Liverpool and share a red wine with your da,” Robertson told Cates. “He always spoke about World Cups.”

Robertson’s emotional Diogo Jota message
In the summer, Jota tragically lost his life, alongside his brother, Andre Silva, in Spain. It rocked the footballing world, no more than the city of Liverpool.
Robertson, looking up to the skies as he tried to take in the emotion of Scotland reaching the World Cup for the first time since 1998, shared how he ‘couldn’t get my mate Diogo Jota out of my head today.’
“I’ve hidden it well, but today I’ve been in bits,” said Robertson. “I know the age I’m at, this could be my last chance to go to the World Cup.
“I couldn’t get my mate Diogo Jota out of my head today. We spoke so much about going to the World Cup. I know he’ll be smiling over me today. I’m so glad it’s ended up this way.
“This group of boys, this group of staff – it’s the best group I’ve been involved in.”
