Bengals receiver Ja’Marr Chase learns verdict of appeal of his suspension

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Bengals receiver Ja’Marr Chase’s one-game suspension for spitting on Steelers defensive back Jalen Ramsey was upheld on Tuesday night.

That means Chase will miss this Sunday’s matchup against the Patriots in Cincinnati. It will be the first game he’s missed since sitting out Week 16 in 2023 vs. the Steelers due to a separated shoulder.

In addition, he will forfeit a game check of more than $500,000 per ESPN’s Adam Schefter as a result of his suspension.

The NFL suspended Chase on Monday, one day after he was caught on video spitting on Ramsey during the fourth quarter of the Steelers’ 34-12 rout of the Bengals. After the spit, Ramsey grabbed Chase’s facemask with his left hand and threw a punch with his right.

Ramsey was ejected from the game as a result of the altercation.

After the game when speaking to reporters, Ramsey accused Chase of spitting on him, which instigated the altercation.

Chase denied the accusation. However, minutes later, video from Austin Briski of Fox 19 Cincinnati showing Chase spitting on Ramsey went viral.

“I ain’t never opened my mouth to that guy,” Chase told reporters, including Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, after Sunday’s game. “He don’t like some of the words I told him. We’d been going back and forth the whole time so I’m sure something got under his skin.

“I didn’t spit on nobody.”

Former NFL receiver Jordy Nelson was jointly appointed by the NFL and NFLPA as the hearing officer in Chase’s appeal.
