Boys & Girls Club of East Mississippi hosts Annual Celebration of Excellence

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The community packed out the Frank Cochran Center to hear from former club members and special guest speakers, which included legendary Heisman Trophy winner, NFL Hall of Famer, and Dallas Cowboys icon Tony Dorsett, along with renowned Mississippi State head football coach Jackie Sherrill.

Dorsett discusses the Boys & Girls Club’s importance to the community.

“Actually, that’s why I am here at the Boys and Girls Club. And the thing about it is our young people need to have some people that they can look up to or want to be like or do this or do that, or just give them some help to say, not help, but say, hey, and you can do it too. All you gotta do is put forth an effort. The thing about it is this, man. It’s like, when I say, and you can do it too, that’s what it is. That’s me. You can do be the same, do the same as what I’ve done. You got all you got to do is take some time and do it and do things the right way and you could possibly do it,” said Dorsett.

Legendary Mississippi State coach Jackie Sherrill talks about the role the club plays in the lives of children.

“And when you look at the Boys and Girls Club, but especially here in Meridian, it’s a community affair. And you’re trying to help kids, you’re trying, the next generation, you’re trying to help kids get off the street. And the Boys and Girls Club does that. You know, they take them, they can do tutoring with them, they can do other things after school. But the most important thing is they give them structure,” said Sherrill.

Money raised from the event will be invested into the club and used to continue to empower the youth.
