Liverpool closing in on deal after Saudi Arabian club submits 'huge bid' - report

Man City 3-0 Liverpool: Match Review

Liverpool are said to be in positive discussions over the future of Ryan Gravenberch.

Liverpool are close to tying down one of their prized assets to a new contract, it has been claimed.

Since Arne Slot took charge of the Reds, Ryan Gravenberch has become an indispensable figure. The midfielder was signed from Bayern Munich for £34 million in the summer of 2023 but was largely confined to a bit-part role during his maiden campaign.

But after Slot succeeded Jurgen Klopp in the Anfield hot seat, Gravenberch has been a mainstay in the starting line-up. Having been deployed in the number-six role, he was the linchpin of the Liverpool team that won the Premier League title last season.

And he has remained a key part of Slot’s plans despite the Reds’ early struggles. So far in the 2025-26 campaign, Gravenberch has recorded three goals and two assists in 12 appearances.

Aged 23, the Netherlands international’s best years are still very much ahead of him. His current contract expires in 2028 but there are suggestions that Liverpool are in talks about extending his time at Anfield. According to reporter Nicolo Schira, the Reds are going through the final details on fresh terms for Gravenberch. It is also claimed that a Saudi Arabian club made Gravenberch a lucrative offer that he rejected during last summer’s transfer window.

Schira posted on X: “Ryan #Gravenberch is getting closer and closer to extend his contract with #Liverpool for a long-term. Ready a new deal until 2030 or 2031. Last details on the length. A Saudi club had submitted a huge bid to the dutch last summer, but he turned it down to stay at #LFC.”

Gravenberch was recently tight-lipped about his future when asked before Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League - but insisted he was happy at Anfield. The former Ajax man said: “Obviously, I’m happy here. We haven’t talked yet [about a new contract], but we’ll see.”

Slot’s decision to convert Gravenberch into a holding midfielder in his first season as Liverpool boss surprised plenty. The move came after the Reds failed to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. On Gravenberch’s development, Slot said last season: “I think he surprised the outside world the most by the position he plays in and how he's done. But I think they have all had a very good season. They have worked really hard and surprised me by how much they want to do it as a team, to be as consistent as they are and to work so hard every single day.

“But, yeah, maybe Ryan has had the biggest uplift of all the players but that is what also comes from more playing time sometimes so you need to be given your chance to show what you are made of."
