Former Manchester City striker Jo has been arrested for the FOURTH time over unpaid child maintenance fees. Jo, 38, was detained in his homeland of Brazil on Tuesday, with the ex-striker said to owe £31,500.

Officers located Jo, whose full name is Joao Alves de Assis Silva, while he was attending a barbecue at a street food kiosk in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. A warrant was his arrest was linked to a 2024 process involving unpaid child maintenance.

The debt stated in the court order was R$220,744.57 (£31,500) and police took Jo to the 16a DP in Barra da Tijuca after carrying out his arrest. Last year, the former Brazil international was detained twice in Campinas as well as in Contagem over the same issue.

Ex-girlfriend Maiara Quiderolly was quick to comment on reports of Jo's arrest in 2024, although it's not known if the debt is related to their son, Joao Gabriel. In a video posted on Instagram, Quiderolly said: "I chose a s*** father for my son.

"I can't receive the pension correctly, when he pays on the right day, he pays in different amounts, so I can't receive it correctly. The only thing set by law, he doesn't do correctly! It's always torture to get things, and always I'm considered wrong."

Jo, who also played for Everton across two loan spells, had previously been freed after paying the sums demanded by the authorities. The 38-year-old retired from professional football for the second time earlier this year following a spell with Brazilian fourth division side Itabirito.

It was the 14th different club of Jo's senior career, including three stints with Corinthians. His six years in Europe began with CSKA Moscow, who sold him to City for £19million in 2008, becoming the Premier League club's record signing under former manager Mark Hughes.

Jo scored just six goals in 42 games for City, who loaned him out to both Everton and Galatasaray. He returned to Brazil in 2011, signing for Internacional.

After joining Atletico Mineiro a year later, Jo rediscovered his form and returned to the national team. Having scored two goals to help his country win the Confederations Cup, he was named in Brazil's squad as they hosted 2014 World Cup.

He made his first appearance in their second group game, coming on as a substitute in a goalless draw with Mexico. Jo made another substitute appearance during Brazil's victory over Chile on penalties in the round of 16.

He then played the full 90 minutes as the hosts lost 3-0 to the Netherlands in the third-place play-off. It proved to be his 20th and final game for Brazil.
