Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is facing an uncertain future after suffering a serious left knee injury that has landed him on injured reserve. The news has rocked the NFL community and ignited strong reactions from fans, many of whom now believe the team’s season could be beyond saving.
Penix injured his knee late in the third quarter of Sunday’s 30-27 overtime loss to the Carolina Panthers, taking a hit as he released the ball. Initial tests revealed damage to his ACL, the same ligament he twice tore in his right knee during his college career at Washington. The move to injured reserve ensures he will miss

at least four games, but team officials have acknowledged concern that his season could already be over.
Before the setback, Penix had started all nine of Atlanta’s games, throwing for 1,982 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions with a 60 percent completion rate. While the rookie showed flashes of promise, inconsistency and turnovers hampered his progress, and the 3-7 Falcons have struggled to produce offensively despite an expected breakout campaign. With the team now in disarray, fans flooded social media calling the situation “cooked,” a phrase that captured both frustration and resignation over how quickly the season has unraveled.
Veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins will step back into the starting lineup after losing his job to Penix earlier this year. Cousins’ own struggles and recent injuries make the transition far from ideal, but Atlanta has few other options. Head coach Raheem Morris has described the situation as devastating but urged the team to rally around its next-man-up mentality for the remainder of the schedule.

“Cooked,” a fan said. “Of course, Atlanta had to destroy their season with injuries… like clockwork How do you even stay competitive when your QB can’t even stay healthy?” another asked.
A supporter mentioned, “Hope he’s ok man.”
“The injury compounds Atlanta’s woes, sidelining top receiver Drake London for Week 12 as well and forcing a return to veteran Kirk Cousins, potentially derailing playoff hopes in the competitive NFC South,” a follower remarked.
“Gotta feel for the guy…injuries suck and he’s dealt with more of them than just about anyone,” a commenter posted.
“Kirk time again,” a sixth social media user reacted.
Among fans, sympathy for Penix remains widespread. Many noted the cruel irony of another knee injury cutting short the season of a quarterback known for perseverance.

For Atlanta, the fallout extends beyond 2025. The organization must now decide whether to rebuild around a rehabilitating Penix or re-evaluate long-term plans at the league’s most important position, leaving the once-promising Falcons at a difficult crossroads.
