Ja’Marr Chase’s appeal of his one-game suspension was denied.
Appeals officer Jordy Nelson upheld the Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver’s suspension on Tuesday night. Chase will miss Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots.
The Bengals go into Week 12 having lost their last three games and go up against a Patriots team that has won eight straight. Cincinnati also remains without quarterback Joe Burrow, though he’s hopeful to return by Thanksgiving.
The NFL suspended Chase one game without pay for “unsportsmanlike conduct” stemming from when he spit on Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey.
By spitting on Rasmey, Chase violated Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which applies to “any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.”
Ramsey accused Chase of spitting on him which led to the Steelers cornerback throwing a punch and getting ejected from Pittsburgh’s eventual win.
“He spit on me,” Ramsey told reporters after the game. “So, it’s up. I don’t give a (expletive) about football after that, respectfully.”
Chase, however, denied he spit on Ramsey.
“I never opened my mouth to that guy,” Chase said, who later added, “I didn’t spit on nobody.”
Chase is eligible to return in Week 13 for Cincinnati’s Thanksgiving Day game against the Baltimore Ravens.
