2 coaches with NFL ties linked to Penn State job

A couple of coaches with NFL ties could be in the mix for the Penn State job, according to college football reporter Bruce Feldman.

The FOX Sports insider joined Chris Fallica for his podcast last Friday and mentioned a recently fired NFL head coach as a possibility to take over the Nittany Lions program.

“Two other names to keep an eye on that we’ve heard that have emerged as candidates of interest – one is Brian Daboll, the recently fired Giants head coach,“ Feldman said. ”Remember, he was the Alabama offensive coordinator when they won the national title in 2017."

As Feldman said, Daboll was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Alabama in 2017, before leaving to become the Bills offensive coordinator.

He held that position from 2018-21, before taking over as the Giants head coach from 2022-25. Daboll was fired earlier this month after a 2-8 start to the year.

Another coach mentioned by Feldman is currently in the NFL but also has experience in college.

“Another one to keep in mind, also in the NFL, and still in the NFL, and that is former Penn State tight end Al Golden, who was Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator and helped them get to the national title game last year. He’s now with the Bengals,” Feldman said.

Golden is currently the Bengals defensive coordinator after winning the Broyles Award as the Notre Dame DC last year. He also played college football at Penn State.

Golden was previously the head coach at Temple and Miami and even though he wasn’t ultra successful at either stop, Feldman believes he could be in the mix for the Penn State job.

“We know people in Happy Valley really think highly of Al Golden. Did a really good job turning Temple around. But then he went to Miami and just never got traction there and hasn’t been a head coach candidate really since then,” Feldman said.
