Chelsea club sources name midfielder as most improved player under Maresca

Moises Caicedo has been getting a lot of praise this season after raising his game to a new level, but he’s not the only one being praised.

Fellow central midfielder Enzo Fernandez is racking up goals and assists, and the Athletic took the chance this week to big up the Argentine.

They ran through his ridiculous output, in terms of minutes played, assists given and goals scored, since February 2022. Simon Johnson says that Chelsea sources think Enzo Maresca has improved his namesake more than any other player:

“There’s an awareness among sources within the club, who asked to be kept anonymous to protect relationships, that he has improved the most of any player under Maresca. He is regarded by the same sources as being a perfect system-fit for how the Italian wants his team to play.”

They also note that the biggest tests are coming next week, when the Blues face two vital fixtures which will define this stage of the season:

“With Chelsea having high-profile games against Barcelona and Arsenal in the next two weeks, they will provide further opportunities for Fernandez to show just how important he has become.”

He still divides fans to some extent, but clearly the club are all in on Enzo, and he has the stats to back that opinion up.
