John McGinn missed out of Scotland celebrations last night having been called for a drugs test.

Chelsea legend John Terry has called for UEFA to review their rules around drug testing after Aston Villa star John McGinn was forced to miss Scotland celebrations on Tuesday night.

Steve Clarke’s side booked their place at the World Cup next summer with a 4-2 win over Denmark, earning a first qualification since 1998. It was perhaps McGinn’s greatest night in his footballing career, but celebrations were halted for the midfielder.

Speaking after the win, which was secured thanks to two injury time goals, McGinn was told to go and enjoy the celebrations but replied that he wasn’t able to. McGinn said: “I’m drugs testing, it’s always me! I must have a look about me!”

The player later took to social media and shared an annoyed selfie with the caption: “Drug test not allowed in the changing room can’t write it.”

McGinn was later able to celebrate by taking his children out onto the pitch to celebrate with the home support but Terry sympathised with the Scotland star missing out on celebrations, recalling an iconic Chelsea night.

In a TikTok, the former Premier League defender said: “Anyone who’s watched the Scotland game and seen John McGinn, the emotion in his interview after the game, and then he’s posted on social media this morning. Unfortunately, he got drug tested after the game.

“For anyone who doesn’t know, you get drug tested after a football match, get taken into a separate room away from celebrations. McGinn spoke in an interview and said it was probably one of the best nights of his life so far and then you miss out on all the celebrations, all the photos.

“It happened to Petr Cech back in 2012 in Munich when we won the Champions League. Best and biggest night in the club’s history and unfortunately there’s no pictures of Big Pete because he’s getting drug tested in a separate room. I think it’s something UEFA and FIFA need to look at - it’s these special moments as players that you cherish and live for. It’s something we should look into.”

Terry went on to reflect on how drug testing was different when he was at the prime of his career, admitting that players were still able to feel part of the celebrations even if called on for a drugs test.

He explained: “Back in the day, when I played a very long time ago, the drug testers used to come in the dressing room and chaperone you around to make sure nothing happened. If you went to the toilet, they’d follow you in the toilet. If you had a shower, they would also follow you in there.

“When you needed to go to a toilet and produce your sample for the drug testing, you would then walk out the dressing room and into a separate room but you’d still get those celebrations as well. Feeling for you John this morning.”
