Tottenham are looking to strengthen their midfield in the upcoming transfer window. The Lilywhites focused heavily on attacking reinforcements during the summer, bringing in Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons, and Randal Kolo Muani. Despite these high-quality additions, the North Londoners failed to address one glaring weakness on the pitch, which continues to trouble Thomas Frank.
Spurs did not secure a reliable box-to-box midfielder capable of operating as a #8 in Frank’s system. At the moment, the manager is relying on Rodrigo Bentancur in that role, asking the Uruguayan to influence both ends of the pitch. Recent reports indicate that Tottenham have been closely monitoring Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay in recent weeks. The box-to-box star has made significant progress in Serie A and played a key role in helping Napoli win the league title last season. The Lilywhites see him as an ideal partner for Joao Palhinha, with Frank reportedly a strong admirer of the 28-year-old.
McTominay has become a heroic figure in Naples following his sensational campaign last season. He scored 13 goals and registered four assists, playing a vital role in Napoli’s title success. His performances earned him the Serie A Most Valuable Player award and even a Ballon d’Or nomination. He has continued his excellent form for Scotland as well, recently scoring a stunning overhead kick against Denmark to help secure World Cup qualification.
However, signing McTominay will not be straightforward for Tottenham. According to Fichajes, Everton are also competing for his signature and are prepared to submit a €70 million bid in January. David Moyes reportedly views McTominay as the next “Marouane Fellaini” and intends to use him as a second striker to help the Toffees climb the table and challenge for European football.
For Spurs, signing the former Manchester United midfielder should be an obvious decision. He is entering his peak years and, if utilised correctly, could help the North Londoners close the gap on their rivals under Frank. McTominay is the ideal box-to-box option and would represent a clear upgrade on Bentancur. His ability to operate as a secondary striker at times would also add a new dimension to Tottenham’s attack moving forward.
